Plaza Nueva is a square in Bilbao popular for its traditional taverns and restaurants as well as shops selling small gifts and souvenirs. It also hosts Sunday flea markets, and even the occasional folk performance, festival and concert, hence the bustling atmosphere on weekends. The arcaded building surrounding the square was once the headquarters of the Biscay government. The design and layout of the square, which was built in 1821, conforms to the neoclassical style.
