About Basilica of the Holy Blood

Established in 1134 and completed in 1157, the Basilica of the Holy Blood was founded by Thierry of Alsace, the Count of Flanders, who, upon returning from the Second Crusade in 1150, brought with him a vial of the blood of Christ and placed it within the Basilica's Museum. The lower chapel of the basilica is the most well preserved church in the Romanesque Style in West Flanders, while the upper chapel features a Gothic Style.
