About Barrio de la Moreria

This historic section of Madrid dates back to the 9th century and constitutes the oldest part of the city. Surrounded by a fortified wall, it is laid out in a series of public squares and is a remarkably intact example of medieval urban planning. The mudejar-style architecture can be seen all around, from the churches and palaces to its gateways and portals. Stand in the Plaza de la Paja, once the civic center of the town, and imagine what life might have been like 1,000 years ago.
