Called the Gateway to the Amazon, Banos is a major tourist center and city in central Ecuador. Located at the northern foothills of the Tungurahua Volcano, the city boasts a series of popular hot springs that give it its name of the "Baths of Holy Water." Here many visitors set off by boat or bike into the Amazon basin, but it also popular for its rafting, hiking, horse-back riding, and the famous basilica, Nuestra Senora de Agua Santa, which honors the Virgin Mary.
