About Baltra Island

Also called South Seymour Island, this small Galapagos island is the location of Seymour Airport and two docks. Baltra Island originated as a United States Army Air Force base during World War II after U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited it in the 1930s. After the war ended, control of the island was transferred to Ecuador and the country's military still maintains a base there. Most visitors to the Galapagos travel via Baltra Island to reach the rest of the islands.
