Formerly known as Gay Head, the Martha's Vineyard community is well known for its spectacular and colorful clay cliffs and has a large population of the Wampanoag Native American tribe. Aquinnah was settled as part of Chilmark in 1669, established as Gay Head in 1870 and its name was changed to the Wampanoag name meaning "land under the hill" in 1997. No one is allowed to climb on or touch the famed cliffs and several beaches around the town are clothing-optional.
