The 119-mile long California river begins in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and ends when it meets the Sacramento River in Sacramento. The American River is divided into North, Middle and South forks. Many people flocked to the river's region during the California Gold Rush that began in 1848. Popular activities on and around the American River include whitewater rafting, fishing, swimming, boating and camping.
