In the 12th century, the Counts of Provence made Aix their capital, but it moved to Marseille during the revolution. Aix’s boulevards are lined with leafy trees and 17th-18th century mansions, making it a pleasant place to take a stroll. Relax in the public squares or enjoy an espresso on Cours Mirabeau. The quarter-mile avenue is lined with cafes and has a grand fountain surrounded by statues of lions. Aix natives Paul Cezanne and Emile Zola came here.
