The hawksbill turtle (scientific name: Eretmochelys imbricata) is a marine animal belonging to the class Reptilia and the family Cheloniidae. They have two pairs of prefrontal scales on their heads, a laterally flattened snout, and a hooked beak-like upper jaw. The primary habitat of hawksbill turtles includes shallow lagoons and coral reef areas, where many caves and deep valleys provide resting places. They primarily feed on sponges found within the coral reefs. Hawksbill turtles are unique among sea turtles for their ability to digest glass. Their diet also includes jellyfish, sea anemones, crustaceans, bivalves, fish, and algae. The keratinous plates of the hawksbill can be made into eyeglass frames or decorative items, while their shells are used in traditional medicine. They are widely distributed across the oceans. However, overfishing has led to hawksbill turtles becoming an endangered species, with populations almost extinct in the coastal waters of China.
