Why Itinerary Choice Matters More Than Ship | Tours4fun Cruise Expert

In the latest episode of Tours4fun’s cruise education series, senior cruise consultant Allen Zhao breaks down why choosing the right route and timing matters as much as selecting the right vessel. Drawing from real client experiences and his three personal trips to Antarctica, Zhao demonstrates how expert itinerary guidance can make or break a vacation.
The Aegean Sea Lesson: Not All Routes Lead to Santorini
“I found them an alternative that was actually less expensive, had a larger ship, and included Santorini,” Zhao explained. “The client was incredibly grateful. That’s the value of understanding the routes, not just the ships.”
Antarctica: Why Fly When You Can Sail
“As a tour leader who’s been to Antarctica three times, I’ve learned that half the trip should be spent on land, not rocking on the ship,” Zhao said. “That’s what these clients want—adventure, not just transportation.”
A Cruise for Every Month
• December through March: When North America is cold, cruise to the Middle East—Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and beyond—where hundreds of dollars covers an eight-day voyage visiting four or five cities, with meals and accommodation included onboard.
• November through March: Antarctica’s sailing season, with expedition ships departing from Ushuaia to land on the world’s southernmost continent.
• July through September: Peak season for Alaska, where passengers witness collapsing glaciers and whales spraying in the straits—“If you capture that on camera, you’ve won,” Zhao said. Also ideal for the Bahamas.
• September through November: Fall foliage cruises from New York to Sydney and Halifax on the East Coast, or sailing from Long Beach and San Diego along the West Coast.
“Every month has different destinations to choose from,” Zhao concluded. “We don’t choose the most expensive—we choose the most right route.”
Expert Guidance in an Ocean of Options
For travelers planning their next cruise vacation, Zhao’s advice is simple: Don’t just compare ships and prices. Compare routes, timing, and what you’ll actually experience. That’s where the real value lies.
