4-Day San Pedro De Atacama Tour: Moon Valley and Toconao | An Oasis in the Desert

Stunning tour

I recently completed this 4-day itinerary, and I must say, the landscapes were absolutely stunning. The Moon Valley and the Mars Valley were highlights, offering some of the most unique views I've ever seen. The trip to Toconao and the Altiplanic Lagoons was also fantastic, with breathtaking scenery and informative local guides. The Tatio Geysers at dawn were an unforgettable experience, and the village of Machuca was charming. However, I would have appreciated a bit more free time on the final day before heading to the airport. Overall, a well-organized trip with spectacular natural wonders!

Preguntas frecuentes sobre tours de San Pedro De Atacama

Which airport is closest to San Pedro de Atacama and how do I get there?

The nearest airport is El Loa Airport (CJC) in Calama, about 100km away. From Calama, travelers must take a shared shuttle bus (transfer) or a private taxi for the 1.5-hour drive to San Pedro de Atacama, as no public buses go directly to the town center.

What is the best time to visit San Pedro de Atacama to avoid extreme weather?

Visit between March and May or September and November for mild daytime temperatures and cool nights. Avoid December to February if you dislike crowds, though it is summer. Winter nights (June-August) can drop below freezing, requiring heavy clothing despite sunny days.

Do I need a special pass to visit the lagoons and geysers near San Pedro de Atacama?

Yes, many attractions like the Tatio Geysers, Laguna Cejar, and Valle de la Luna require purchasing a tourist ticket or joining an authorized tour. Some sites are within protected areas managed by local communities, so independent entry without a guide or permit is often restricted.

What currency should I use in San Pedro de Atacama and are cards accepted?

Use Chilean Pesos (CLP) for most transactions. While some hotels and larger restaurants accept credit cards, cash is essential for small shops, tours, and rural attractions. ATMs are limited in town, so withdraw money in Calama or Santiago before arriving.
