More than 3.5 million people visit this Australian island each year making it on of the continent's most popular vacation spots. Phillip Island was first visited by European explorers in 1798 and had long been home to indigenous Australians. It was named after New South Wales' first governor Arthur Phillip and is located approximately 87 miles from Melbourne. A 2,100-foot bridge connects the 39-square-mile island to the mainland. Points of interest are The Nobbies, Phillip Island Nature Park and its Koala Conservation Centre, Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, Rhyll Trout and Bush Tucker Farm and Phillip Island Chocolate Factory.
