Question 1

Which airport is closest to the Leshan Giant Buddha and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is the primary gateway, located about 150 kilometers away. From there, take a high-speed train from Chengdu East Station to Leshan Station, which takes roughly one hour. Upon arrival, catch bus number 3 or a taxi directly to the scenic area entrance. This combination offers the fastest and most reliable route for international and domestic travelers.

Question 2

What is the best time of year to visit avoiding rain and massive crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit during late March to early May or September to October for mild weather and lower rainfall. Avoid the summer monsoon season from June to August, as heavy rains can cause river levels to rise and obscure views. Also, steer clear of major Chinese holidays like the Spring Festival and National Day Golden Week, when domestic tourism peaks and queues become unmanageable.

Question 3

Do I need a specific local pass or ticket to enter the Leshan Giant Buddha scenic area?

Accepted Answer

You must purchase an entry ticket for the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area, which includes access to the stacking paths and the viewing platform. There is no separate city pass required solely for this site. Buy tickets online in advance via official WeChat mini-programs or travel platforms to secure your slot, as daily visitor caps often sell out during peak seasons.

Question 4

Can I climb down to the feet of the Buddha and what should I expect?

Accepted Answer

Yes, visitors can descend the narrow Nine Bends Plank Road to the base of the statue, but the queue often exceeds two hours during peak times. The stairs are steep and single-file, making them unsuitable for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia. If the line is too long, view the statue from the boat tour on the Min River instead, which offers a complete frontal perspective without the climb.
