Mount Royal

The vast hill in Montreal has a 103-foot tall lighted cross erected in 1924 by Saint-Jean Baptiste Society to replace the original 1643 monument planted by Montreal's founder Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve as he promised the Virgin Mary he'd carry it up the hill if the area withstood flooding. Mount Royal contains a park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and dedicated in 1876. It is a popular spot for skiing, tobogganing and tubing in the winter and tam-tam playing in the summer. The park brings five million visitors annually.
