Former Kingdom of Wessex

The Former Kingdom of Wessex was founded by Cerdic in 519 and lasted until England became a unified state under Æthelstan (the first King of England) in 927. During this time, the Anglo-Saxon kingdom grew to be the most powerful in England. Once pagan, it became Christian with its ruler’s baptism in the 7th century. A fictional version of Wessex famously appears in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure. Today, Wessex is close to many attractions in the south of England including Bath, Stonehenge and Glastonbury.
