Devils Tower National Monument

The first ever national monument in the United States was designated by American President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and the 5,114-foot tall Wyoming rock formation is considered sacred to many local Native American tribes. Devils Tower located in the Black Hills received its name when Col. Richard Irving Dodge's interpreter translated it wrong as "Bad God's Tower" that turned into Devils Tower. Climbing the monolith is a popular activity. The Circle of Sacred Smoke Sculpture by Junkyu Muto is on monument grounds and represents the sedimentary rock tower's significance to more than 20 Native American tribes.
