Belem National Palace

Built in 1559, Belem National Palace has not only served as the official residence of Portugal’s monarchs but the presidents of the country since 1910. It is also home to the Presidency Museum, which houses a permanent collection illustrating the history of the nation’s symbols and the role of the presidents. The palace itself consists of a central building and five others, with the main façade facing the Tagus River. Fronting the palace are manicured gardens, statues and ponds.
