One of Columbia’s most renowned historical attractions, the town of Villa de Leyva in Columbia is popular with visitors because of its excellent colonial architecture. This picturesque town was spared modern development, perhaps because of its location off the beaten path, resulting in the preservation of many unique heritage buildings from the 16th century. At the center of town lies the Plaza Mayor, which is the largest square in Colombia at 150,690 square feet (14,000 sq m). The town was founded in 1572 named after the first president of the New Kingdom of Granada, Andrés Díaz Venero de Leiva.
