Originally designated New Orleans' red light district from 1897 to 1917 as a way to control prostitution within the city, the 16-block area was officially named "The District." Storyville, located near a train station, was the section of the city where prostitution was legal and even had a Blue Book guide to the various brothels and parlors with Mahogany Hall being the most famous. It also was a popular place to listen to jazz music. Today, it is the location of the Iberville Projects housing development and most of the former district's buildings have been demolished. There is a musical called "Storyville" based on this former red light district in New Orleans.
