The island of St. Thomas is located in the Caribbean Sea and is part of the United States Virgin Islands, along with St. John and the Water Island. The island was originally settled around 1500 B.C. by the Ciboney people. The island was once conquered by the Danish from 1666 to 1917, when the island was purchased by the U.S. for $25 million in gold. Today the island has a population of more than 51,000, making up almost 50% of the population of the U.S. Virgin Islands in total.
