At 20,574 feet Salcantay is the highest peak of the Willkapampa mountain range in the Peruvian Alps and is a major highlight on the Salcantay Trek, an alternative approach to Inca Trail. While not the largest mountain in Peru, it is one of the steepest, requiring climbers to push over snow, ice, rock, and over glaciers. Just to the north of the mountain is Machu Picchu and visitors to the Inca site can view the summit from the main sundial.
