The 100-mile-long Washington state inlet of the Pacific Ocean is the second biggest estuary in the country. Puget Sound joins with 19 different river basins and contains a mixture of salt water and fresh water. Explorer George Vancouver claimed the waterway for Great Britain in 1792 and named it after his lieutenant Peter Puget. Puget Sound has many islands that are connected to the mainland by the Washington State Ferries.
