Home to the world famous Strokkur and Great Geysir, the Haukadalur geothermal field is one of the major stops on the Golden Circle route in Southern Iceland. Alongside other regions in Iceland, the volcanic and tectonic activity has shaped the region to allow the geothermal heat to rise to the surface, forming geysers, mud pools, and hot springs. The excess water from many of the geysers and springs have formed small streams for micro-organisms to flourish and evolve, some of which are capable of surviving at temperatures up to 100 degrees Celsius (212 Fahrenheit).
