Just 70 miles south of the US-Mexico border, Guadalupe hosts the largest wineries in Mexico. Because of the dry climate of Baja and the rich soil, Guadalupe has served as a major wine producer in the world for centuries - so much so that wineries were actually banned by Spain in the mid-17th century. The ban was largely ignored by wine makers however, who continued to experiment with the valley's regions and grape stock to produce quality wine. The annual Vintage Festival in Ensenada brings together the various wineries in August for concerts, tastings, and festivities.
