This famous prison in Philadelphia once held gangster Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. Eastern State Penitentiary was designed in Gothic Revival style by John Haviland and built in 1829 on 11 acres. It was the largest and most expensive prison ever when it was constructed and a model for hundreds of future prisons across the world. The U.S. National Historic Landmark was closed as a prison in 1971 and is currently a museum where visitors can see Capone's cell, the barber shop, dining hall and much more. There also are numerous art exhibits throughout the prison.
