An HBO television series in based on the early days of this Old West city located in South Dakota. Deadwood was on land first given to Native Americans by the Treaty of Laramie in 1868, but six years later the Black Hills Gold Rush brought thousands of people to Deadwood. It was settled by frontiersmen Charlie and Steve Utter in 1876. Deadwood turned into a lawless town with many saloons, gambling establishments and prostitution houses. Western figures Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried in the city's Mount Moriah Cemetery. Today, Deadwood attracts many tourists with its Wild West history and casinos.
