The 221-foot obelisk statue memorializes the first battle of the American Revolutionary War and construction began in 1825 with war hero Marquise de LaFayette laying the first stone on 50th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill. The monument completed in 1842 is located atop Breed's Hill in Boston's Charlestown neighborhood along Freedom Trail. While the colonial forces led by Col. William Prescott were forced to retreat from Breed's Hill and Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775 after the third assault by British Redcoats, the outcome of the battle was considered positive because the colonists demonstrated they could stand up as a match to enemy British forces that also lost many soldiers during the fight. The Battle of Bunker Hill was mostly fought on Breed's Hill and visitors can climb the granite monument's 294 steps to the top of the U.S. National Historic Landmark.
