The vast 6.1 million-acre nature reserve centered around the dome-shaped Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York is the largest state park in the contiguous 48 United States. Adirondack Park was established in 1892 and features more than 3,000 lakes, 14 rivers and 2,000 miles of hiking trails. The mountains have 100-plus peaks with the highest being Mount Marcy at 5,343 feet. Adirondack Park is a National Historic Landmark. Popular attractions are Whiteface Mountain, Lake Placid, Lake George, Adirondack Museum, The Wild Center, Grant Cottage State Historic Site, Camp Pine Knot, Camp Santanoni, Fort Crown Point and Fort Ticonderoga. There are 53 different animal species that reside in the park.
