You may wish to come a day early in order to explore Casablanca, and take some time to see its medina, beachfront, and classic examples of Art Deco architecture.

Be sure to also visit the spectacular Hassan II Mosque. Entrance is only permitted via guided tours, which operate from Saturday to Thursday (closed Fridays) at 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am, and 2:00pm. Visiting Attractions

Day 02
Fez

Meknes - Volubilis - Fez

Hotel: Hotel Mounia or similar

We'll begin our adventure early today and drive to Meknes for a guided walk through this imperial city. Expect to visit the 18th-century Bab Mansour, the ornamental gate to the city, the bustling souk, the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the Meknes Royal Palace.

Later, we'll continue through the rolling hills to the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Here we'll listen to a certified local guide explain life in the Roman Empire at this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Visit the impressive, well-preserved Roman ruins. Peer into old bathhouses, marvel at the still-present mosaic floors, and gaze up at towering marble pillars. Hear stories about life in this Roman city that will leave you in awe of just how far their empire stretched.

Afterwards, we'll continue to Fez, one of Morocco's most interesting cities.

Day 03
Fez

Fez

Hotel: Hotel Mounia or similar

We'll begin today with a half-day walking tour of Fes medina, one of the world’s largest medinas with more than 9000 winding streets lying within 365 hectares. See buildings in the medina that date back to the 9th century; there are 350 mosques in the medina that are still in use today.

Enter through one of the great gates into the chaos. Explore the artisans’ quarters as well as the many carpenters, bakers, butchers, and spice sellers. A highlight is a visit to the famous Fes tannery with great views over the men hard at work treating and dyeing the different hides.

Then we'll have a traditional, home-cooked Moroccan lunch that benefits rural Moroccan women and children. Afterwards, you'll have the rest of the day to yourself

In the evening, opt for dinner in a converted riad complete with local specialties, music, and belly dancing.

Visiting Attractions

Day 04
The Sahara

Fez - Merzouga - Sahara

Hotel: Auberge Yasmina or similar

Start early today with a drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains to reach the edge of the Sahara, Merzouga.

In late afternoon, we'll set off by camel to a desert camp deep in the dunes. Learn to tie a turban to keep the desert sun off your face and add a little flare to your photos.

Enjoy a warm welcome with mint tea. A traditional dinner under the stars, cooked by our hosts, awaits. In the evening, listen to stories about life in this region and, perhaps, some traditional music on the drums.

Tips:
There will be a chance to repack and take only overnight bags out to the desert. The accommodations are basic, with four people per tent (though feel free to sleep out under the stars). Bathroom facilities are nature.
Mattresses with sheet and blanket are provided. For winter months (Nov- April), we recommend bringing a sleeping bag for additional warmth.

There will be the chance to shower upon arrival in Merzouga the following morning.

Day 05
Tinghir

Sahara - Todra Gorge - Tinghir

Hotel: Hotel Amazir or similar

We'll rise early today and get on our trusty camels and head back to Merzouga. We'll say farewell to our humped friends and head through a stone desert to the stunning Todra Gorge.

Wedged between massive cliff walls, the gorge is filled with a green oasis of palm trees. This serene spot is great for hiking, relaxing on the edge of the river or sampling some local Berber delicacies.

From here we'll head to a hotel in Tinghir

Tips:
We recommend bringing a headlamp for getting around at night if necessary.

Day 06
Ait Benhaddou

Tinghir - Ait Ben Haddou

Hotel: La Rose du Sable or similar

Today we'll travel along the “Route of 1000 Kasbahs” to the thriving town of Ouarzazate for a lunch stop. This town is home to Atlas Film Studios, where many films have been shot over the years, including "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Gladiator."

Continue on to the fascinating and beautiful Ait Ben Haddou, a wonderful example of a kasbah. Here we'll take a guided tourof this the UNESCO World Heritage site. Of all the remaining Kasbahs in Morocco, the walls and interior of this area are the most intact. The Kasbah still houses a few families, but many now live in the adjacent village. Like many of the earthen built fortresses in Ouarzazate, Aït Ben Haddou has been used in many film and television productions like Gladiator, Babel, and Game of Thrones.

Day 07
Marrakesh

Marrakesh

Hotel: Hotel Oudaya or similar

Today we'll head to Marrakesh. The journey to Marrakesh includes breathtaking views throughout the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2260m).

Find spices, traditional jalabas and slippers, or famous Moroccan lanterns. The selection is exhaustive. Bargain away – it's definitely part of the fun!

Afterwards, opt to visit the Djemaa el Fna Square in the evening to see the gathering of musicians and street performers. Don't leave without indulging in a feast at the famous food stalls!

Special Notes
  • Travel Style: Classic. All of the highlights, culture, access, and I-can’t-believe-we-did-that moments, all at a great price.
  • Service Level: Standard. Comfortable tourist-class accommodations with character; mix of public and private transport.
  • Physical Rating: Light. Light walking and hiking suitable for most fitness levels. Nothing too challenging.
  • Trip Type: Small Group. Small group experience; Max 15, avg 10.
  • This is a very fast paced itinerary which covers lots of ground. While this is great as it allows us to see a huge amount in the available time, it also means some early starts, some long drives in the mini van and less free time than many other G Adventures. We feel that if you enter this trip with this knowledge and expectation, you will appreciate even more the variety of locations we are able to include in this itinerary.
  • We use a 16-seater minivan for this tour. With a full group every seat will be used. The legroom in the minivan is possibly smaller than you may be used to and taller passengers may find space a little cramped. It is important to be aware that as it is not a legal requirement in buses in Morocco, your vehicle may not be equipped with seat belts.
  • Please note that it is not possible to reach our desert camp by 4WD or any other vehicle. There is the option to walk (can be very hot and tiring) for those who cannot/prefer not to ride a camel.
  • Please note that the climate in Morocco can be both very hot during the day in summer months (up to 50°C) and cold at night in the mountains in autumn, early spring and winter (down to -6°C). Summer months, from April to September are very hot throughout Morocco. Winter months November to March can be cool to cold, especially in the Atlas Mountains, with high probability of snowfall. Most Moroccan buildings are not equipped with heating, so without proper layers you will be cold at night. Please bring appropriate clothing for the months in which you are travelling and check temperatures before you leave. Bedding is provided in the desert camp and the gite, but in winter months if you feel the cold you may wish to bring a sleeping bag too.
  • You will be on the move a lot, so our advice is to pack as lightly as possible. We highly recommend using a backpack or light sports bag, whichever you find easiest to carry, plus a small daypack. Luggage space on public transport is limited. You must be prepared to carry your own bags and be comfortable carrying them between transport and hotels (max. 15-20 mins walking), hopping on and off trains and public buses and up and down stairs.
  • This tour/activity is overseen by a select local operator in the region. Upon booking your tour or activity and after receiving confirmation, you will be issued an e-ticket detailing the local operator's name and contact information.
