The capital of the British Columbia province, this Western Canadian city is located on Vancouver Island. Victoria was settled by the British in 1843 and named after the United Kingdom's Queen Victoria. It is nicknamed the "City of Gardens" and is home to the popular tourist attraction Butchart Gardens. Like nearby Vancouver, it is home to many First Nation peoples. Notable sites are the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, Thunderbird Park, Inner Victoria Harbour, Christ Church Cathedral, Fairmont Empress and Fisgard Lighthouse.
