Xiamen Travel Guide: Gulangyu Island & Colonial Architecture

cover

Xiamen is a coastal city in southeastern China with a car-free island just offshore, a mild climate for much of the year, and a food scene built around fresh seafood. The island, Gulangyu, is the main reason most visitors come, and it earns the attention: its lanes are lined with villas and churches that mix Chinese and Western building styles, and the whole island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I wrote this Xiamen, China travel guide for first-time visitors who want practical answers. It covers where Xiamen is, how to travel to Xiamen, China, from the airport or train station, how to reach and visit Gulangyu, the best months to go, and a three-day Xiamen travel itinerary.

Where Is Xiamen China?

Xiamen is a sub-provincial city in southeastern Fujian Province, on the Taiwan Strait. Zhangzhou borders it to the west, and Quanzhou sits to the north. The Kinmen Islands, which Taiwan administers, lie less than 6 kilometers away across Xiamen Bay.

Xiamen was one of China's first four special economic zones, designated in 1980. At the 2020 census, it had 5,163,970 residents. The city covers Xiamen Island and areas on the mainland side, and Gulangyu is a small separate island just off Xiamen Island's southwest coast.

Best Time to Visit Xiamen

The city is mild for much of the year, so timing mostly comes down to avoiding summer rain and typhoons. Sources agree on the broad picture but differ on exact figures, so I've kept the table general.

Season What to expect
Spring (March to May) Warming up, with sea breezes. Rain increases through April and May
Summer (June to September) Hot, humid and wet. Typhoon season falls in these months, with sources citing either June or July as the start
Autumn (October to November) Comfortable and drier. Most sources rank it among the best times to visit
Winter (December to February) Mild, with cooler days and some rain. Prices are lower

I'd aim for October or November, or for March to May. July to September brings the most crowds and the highest prices, as well as the weather risk. If you travel in summer, keep your schedule flexible, because typhoons can disrupt ferries and flights.

How to Travel to Xiamen China

Most visitors who travel to Xiamen, China, arrive by air or by high-speed rail.

By Air

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport is about 10 kilometers from downtown. From the airport, you have these options:

Option Details
Taxi Under 30 minutes to the city center in normal traffic. One guide lists fares of 40 to 60 yuan
Airport shuttle bus Runs to Xiamen Railway Station and the ferry terminal for Gulangyu. One guide lists 10 yuan to the station and 15 yuan to the ferry terminal
Metro Line 3 serves the airport area, but it does not reach the terminal. You take a short shuttle or taxi ride to Gaoqi station first
Private transfer Best for late arrivals, when metro and shuttle buses have stopped

Shuttle schedules and fares change, so check them at the airport.

By Train

High-speed trains arrive at Xiamen North Station, in Jimei District on the mainland side. The station connects to Shenzhen North, Quanzhou, Fuzhou, Wenzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and other cities. On the Fuzhou South route, the faster trains take about 1.5 hours.

Xiamen North is a long way from the island, so allow extra time to reach your hotel. Sources disagree on whether the metro is a practical link, so I'd rely on a taxi or a city bus and confirm the best route when you arrive. Slower trains use Xiamen Station, which is closer to the island's main areas. Always check the station name on your ticket.

Getting Around the City

Xiamen has city buses, taxis, ferries, and a metro system. For most visitors, taxis and ride-hailing cover the sights on the main island. The metro's Line 3 passes near the Gulangyu ferry pier, according to one guide, which makes it useful on the way to the island.

Gulangyu Island: What Makes It Special

Gulangyu is a small island facing Xiamen across a narrow channel. After Xiamen opened as a commercial port in 1843, the island became a place where Chinese and foreign communities lived side by side, and it was formally established as an international settlement in 1903. UNESCO inscribed it as "Kulangsu: Historic International Settlement" on July 8, 2017.

Cars are banned. You walk everywhere, or you ride the island's electric sightseeing carts. A full walking loop is about 6 kilometers, with plenty of slopes and cobblestones, so wear comfortable shoes. Gulangyu is also known as the "Island of Pianos," and the Piano Museum is one of its best-known stops.

The Colonial Architecture of Gulangyu

The island's buildings are the real draw. UNESCO describes an urban fabric that blends several styles:

Style What it means
Traditional Southern Fujian The local building tradition, shaped by the region's climate and materials
Western Classical Revival European-influenced buildings with formal, classical details
Veranda Colonial Buildings with covered verandas, suited to the humid climate
Amoy Deco A local style that combines early 20th-century Modernism with Art Deco. UNESCO calls it the most distinctive expression of the island's cultural fusion

"Amoy" is the historic foreign name for Xiamen, which is why you'll see it on the island. The best way to see these styles is to wander the back lanes instead of staying on the main routes between piers and attractions. Look at the rooflines, windows, and verandas, and compare how Chinese and Western details sit side by side on a single building.

How to Get to Gulangyu Island

You reach Gulangyu by ferry from Xiamen. The main points:
  • Visitor ferry terminals. The daytime visitor ferry runs from the Dongdu cruise terminal (Xiagu Wharf). Evening services run from Hall 2 of the Xiamen Ferry Terminal to Sanqiutian Wharf. A Trip.com guide updated in September 2026 lists daytime service from 8:10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and evening service from 5:50 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.
  • Crossing time. Sources put the crossing anywhere from about 8 to 20 minutes. Allow 25 to 30 minutes before departure for security and boarding.
  • Fares. The Xiamen government's travel page lists round-trip fares of 35 to 50 yuan depending on the pier. The Trip.com guide lists 35 yuan for standard, 50 for comfort, and 60 for deluxe. Children under 6 or under 1.2 meters ride free.
  • Booking and ID. The government page says tickets are sold through the official Xiamen Ferry Company website and WeChat account, and that you must carry the original ID or passport used to book. It dates from 2021, and the page warns that third-party sellers are not authorized. Some travel platforms now sell ferry tickets too, so confirm the current booking channel.
  • Visitor limits. The same page mentions a visitor quota for the island of 65,000. Tickets can sell out in peak season, so book early.
Bring your passport, because you will likely need it for booking and for security checks.

What to See on Gulangyu

Sunlight Rock

Sunlight Rock is the island's highest point, at about 92.7 meters. A local saying holds that if you haven't climbed it, you haven't really been to Xiamen. Expect steep, narrow steps near the top. A Trip.com guide lists adult entry at about 50 yuan and opening hours of 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Allow one to one and a half hours for the round trip.

Shuzhuang Garden and the Piano Museum

Shuzhuang Garden began as a private villa in 1913 and is now open to the public. The Piano Museum is inside the garden and holds nearly 100 antique pianos. A Trip.com guide lists an adult ticket at 30 yuan, covering both, with free entry for visitors 70 and older. Allow one to one and a half hours, or two if you take a lot of photos.

Haoyue Garden and the Zheng Chenggong Statue

On Fuding Rock, Haoyue (Bright Moon) Garden holds a statue of Zheng Chenggong, about 15.7 meters tall. It's a good stop on the way across the island, and it gives you a view of the coast.

Time Needed

Most visitors spend one full day on the island. If you want to climb Sunlight Rock and visit Shuzhuang Garden without rushing, start with the first ferry of the day.

Xiamen Travel Itinerary: 3 Days

This Xiamen travel itinerary puts Gulangyu on the first full day and uses the following days for the main island.

Day 1: Arrive and Settle In

Arrive in Xiamen and check in. If you land early, take a short walk through the neighborhood around your hotel and book your Gulangyu ferry tickets for the next morning. Eat dinner at a seafood restaurant, since fresh seafood is a local specialty.

Day 2: Gulangyu Island

Catch an early ferry. Start with Sunlight Rock while the air is cooler, then walk down toward Shuzhuang Garden and the Piano Museum. After lunch, spend the afternoon on the back lanes looking at the villas and churches. Head to Haoyue Garden before you leave, and take the ferry back before the evening rush. If you want to see the island at night, the Hall 2 evening ferry to Sanqiutian runs late.

Day 3: Xiamen Island

Use the last day for the sights on Xiamen Island. Nanputuo Temple dates to the Tang dynasty and is a good morning stop. Hulishan Fortress is known for its large German-made cannons. In the afternoon, walk through Zengcuoan or Shapowei, two traditional neighborhoods known for old-style buildings and local food, and finish with a walk by Yundang Lake.

Itinerary Variations

2-day version. Keep Day 2 on Gulangyu and use a half day for Nanputuo Temple and one neighborhood.
4-day version. Add Xiamen Botanical Garden and the Water Garden Expo Park, and give Gulangyu a slower pace.
As part of a longer trip. Xiamen fits well into a wider China route that includes other coastal cities, and China tours show how it pairs with other regions.

Final Thoughts
