Tours4fun Shifts Focus to Inbound Tourism, Starting with Sichuan

LOS ANGELES — Allen Wang, co-founder of Tours4Fun, has announced a strategic shift in the company's mission: after two decades of helping Chinese travelers explore the world, Tours4Fun will now focus on bringing international visitors to China, with Sichuan Province as the flagship destination.

From Chengdu to Los Angeles

Wang's journey began 20 years ago when he left his hometown of Chengdu, Sichuan, for Los Angeles with approximately 5000 dollars — nearly his family's entire savings. Like many immigrants, he faced language barriers, cultural adjustments, and uncertainty about his future.

He worked multiple jobs to adapt: serving tables, chopping vegetables in restaurant kitchens, delivering newspapers, providing transportation services, and working as a tour guide. These experiences gave him firsthand insight into what travelers need when navigating unfamiliar destinations.

Building Tours4Fun

In 2004, Wang and his partners founded Tours4Fun with a simple idea: use the internet to aggregate local travel products across the United States, making it easier for Chinese students, families, visiting parents, exchange scholars, and overseas Chinese communities to find authentic, reliable travel experiences.

Over the past two decades, Tours4Fun has served millions of travelers and built deep partnerships with more than 1,000 local tour operators worldwide. The platform now covers destinations across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

A New Mission for a New Era

Today, Wang sees a fundamental shift in global travel trends. Twenty years ago, Chinese travelers wanted to see the world. Now, increasing numbers of international visitors — particularly younger generations — want to experience China.

"Most foreigners still learn about China through the internet or secondhand accounts, not through direct experience," Wang said. "They haven't yet encountered China's AI innovations, electric vehicles, 5,000 years of history, or its diverse natural landscapes."

To address this gap, Tours4Fun recently launched a summer camp program bringing American teenagers to China. "Real understanding comes from direct experience," Wang explained.

Why Sichuan?

When asked where he would send foreign visitors in China, Wang's answer is immediate: Sichuan.

"Sichuan is like a microcosm of China," he said. "It has culture, history, natural scenery, incredible food, modern cities, and a vibrant street life."

He highlights specific attractions including Dujiangyan, Jiuzhaigou, Mount Emei, Sanxingdui Museum, and the Panda Base. Beyond sightseeing, Sichuan offers immersive cultural experiences: traditional gaiwan tea, hot pot, Sichuan opera face-changing, and the relaxed lifestyle of Chengdu's Yulin East Road and Dongjiao Memory art district.

The Road Ahead

"Twenty years ago, I went from Chengdu to Los Angeles to help Chinese people see the world," Wang said. "Now, I'm going from Los Angeles back to Chengdu to help the world see China. My identity hasn't changed — I'm still a travel professional and entrepreneur. But my mission is evolving."

Wang emphasized that this shift is deeply personal. "Having settled in North America for so long, if I can help North Americans come to China and see today's China with their own eyes, that would be incredibly meaningful."
