Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Torres del Paine National Park?

Accepted Answer

The peak season runs from October to April, offering warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours ideal for hiking. December to February brings the strongest winds and largest crowds. For fewer visitors and autumn colors, target March or April. Winter (June-August) sees heavy snow, closing many trails and services, making it suitable only for specialized expeditions.

Question 2

Which airport should I fly into to reach Torres del Paine National Park?

Accepted Answer

Fly into Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport (PUQ) in Punta Arenas, Chile. From there, take a 3-4 hour bus or shuttle transfer directly to the park entrance. Some travelers also fly into El Calafate (FTE) in Argentina and cross the border, but this requires additional border formalities and longer transit times compared to the direct route from Punta Arenas.

Question 3

Do I need a special pass or permit to enter Torres del Paine National Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all visitors must purchase an entrance ticket at the park gate or online in advance. Fees vary by nationality and season. If planning to hike the W Trek or O Circuit, you must also reserve campsites or refugios months ahead through CONAF or private operators. No general hiking permit is needed beyond site reservations, but carry your passport for checkpoint verification.

Question 4

What currency is accepted in Torres del Paine, and are credit cards widely usable?

Accepted Answer

Chilean Pesos (CLP) are the official currency; cash is essential for small lodges, tips, and remote stands. Major lodges and visitor centers accept Visa and Mastercard, but ATMs are scarce inside the park. Withdraw cash in Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas before arriving. USD and other foreign currencies are rarely accepted directly and may incur poor exchange rates if taken.
