Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Tiananmen Square to avoid crowds and extreme weather?

Accepted Answer

Visit during mid-April to May or late September to October for mild temperatures and clear skies. Avoid national holidays like October 1st, when crowds peak. Winter brings freezing winds, while summer offers high heat and sudden rainstorms. Early morning arrivals before 7 AM help bypass the largest tour groups.

Question 2

Which airport serves Tiananmen Square and what is the fastest public transport link?

Accepted Answer

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) both serve the city. From PEK, take the Airport Express train to Dongzhimen, then transfer to Metro Line 2. From PKX, use the Daxing Airport Express to Caoqiao and switch to Line 10. Both routes reach Tiananmen East or West stations in under 90 minutes.

Question 3

Do I need a reservation to enter Tiananmen Square and how do I obtain one?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all visitors must book a free timed-entry ticket online via the official Tiananmen Square reservation platform at least one day in advance. Bring your original passport for identity verification at the security checkpoint. Walk-ins are no longer accepted. Arrive thirty minutes before your slot to allow time for strict security screening.

Question 4

What items are prohibited when visiting Tiananmen Square and nearby attractions?

Accepted Answer

Drones, lighters, knives, and large backpacks are strictly banned. Liquids over 100ml and aerosol sprays are also confiscated at security. Umbrellas are allowed but must be closed during entry. Plan to store prohibited items at your hotel or use left-luggage services at nearby subway stations before approaching the square perimeter.
