Question 1

What is the best time to visit Thousand-Island Lake to avoid heavy rain?

Accepted Answer

Plan your trip between September and November for dry, mild weather. Avoid the plum rain season from mid-June to July, which brings persistent humidity and downpours. Summer months are hot and prone to sudden thunderstorms, while winter can be chilly. Autumn offers clear skies ideal for boat tours and hiking without the disruption of frequent rainfall common in other seasons.

Question 2

Which airport is closest to Thousand-Island Lake and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

Qiandao Lake Airport serves limited domestic flights, so most travelers fly into Hangxiaoshan International Airport. From Hangzhou, take a direct high-speed train to Qiandaohu Station, which takes about one hour. Alternatively, intercity buses depart hourly from Hangzhou South Bus Station. Taxis are available at the train station for the final twenty-minute drive to the lakefront hotels or ferry terminals.

Question 3

Do I need a specific pass to enter the islands at Thousand-Island Lake?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a combined entrance ticket is required for the central scenic area, covering the ferry ride and access to major islands like Meifeng and Moonlight. Purchase this at the main tourist center or via official WeChat mini-programs to skip lines. Note that separate fees may apply for specific activities like cable cars or drifting. Keep your ticket handy, as staff check it at each island docking point.

Question 4

What local customs should I respect when dining near Thousand-Island Lake?

Accepted Answer

When eating local fish head stew, wait for the host or eldest person to start before you begin. It is customary to share dishes family-style rather than ordering individual plates. Tipping is not expected in restaurants. Avoid sticking chopsticks upright in rice bowls, as this resembles funeral rituals. Also, try to finish the food on your plate to show appreciation for the fresh lake ingredients.
