Step into the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Jiaohe, a UNESCO World Heritage site carved directly from a loess plateau near Turpan. This ancient oasis city, once the bustling capital of the Cheshi kingdom, offers a unique travel experience where wind-sculpted earth forms labyrinthine streets and temples. Wander through the preserved Buddhist monasteries and residential quarters that cling to the cliff edges, overlooking the verdant Yarlung Zangbo River valley below. Unlike other archaeological sites, Jiaohe was built by excavating downward rather than constructing upward, creating a striking silhouette against the harsh Xinjiang sky. Visitors can trace the footsteps of Silk Road merchants while marveling at the ingenious irrigation systems that sustained life in this arid landscape for centuries. The stark contrast between the golden ruins and the surrounding greenery makes every corner photogenic, inviting travelers to imagine the vibrant commerce that once thrived here before its mysterious abandonment.
