Question 1

Which airport is closest to Sun Moon Lake and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

Taichung International Airport (RMQ) is the nearest gateway, located about 90 minutes away by road. Travelers can book a direct shuttle bus from the airport terminal to Shuishe Pier or take a taxi for faster arrival. High-speed rail users should alight at Taichung HSR Station and transfer to the Nantou Express Bus for a scenic one-hour ride directly to the lake perimeter.

Question 2

When is the rainy season in Sun Moon Lake and does it affect travel?

Accepted Answer

The primary rainy season occurs from May through September, coinciding with the summer monsoon and typhoon threats. Heavy downpours can occasionally suspend ferry services between Shuishe, Ita Thao, and Xuanguang temples. Visitors should monitor weather forecasts closely during these months and pack waterproof gear, as trails may become slippery and visibility reduced on the water.

Question 3

What is the best way to buy a pass for cycling around Sun Moon Lake?

Accepted Answer

No single circulating bus pass covers the entire lake loop, but the Sun Moon Lake Electric Boat ticket offers unlimited hops between major piers for one day. For cyclists, rental shops in Shuishe and Ita Thao provide road bikes without needing a pass. Purchase tickets at any pier service center or use EasyCard for seamless payment on buses and boats throughout the Nantou county area.

Question 4

Are there specific cultural customs to observe when visiting temples around the lake?

Accepted Answer

When entering Wenwu Temple or Xuanguang Temple, dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees. Remove hats before entering main prayer halls and speak quietly to respect worshippers. Do not point feet directly at deity statues or altar tables. Photography is generally permitted outdoors but often prohibited inside inner sanctums, so look for signage or ask staff before raising your camera.
