Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Stonehenge to avoid crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit Stonehenge in the early morning or late afternoon during the off-season (November to February) to avoid crowds. Weekdays are quieter than weekends. Booking a timed entry ticket in advance ensures faster access. Consider visiting during the winter solstice (December 21) for a unique experience, though it draws larger gatherings.

Question 2

How do I get from London to Stonehenge using public transport?

Accepted Answer

Take a train from London Waterloo to Salisbury (about 1.5 hours), then board the Stonehenge Tour bus (routes 135 or Stonehenge Tour shuttle) from Salisbury bus station. The shuttle runs seasonally, typically April to October. Outside those months, take a local bus or book a guided day tour that includes round-trip transportation.

Question 3

Is there a combined ticket for Stonehenge and nearby attractions?

Accepted Answer

Yes, English Heritage offers a combined Stonehenge and Salisbury admission ticket. Alternatively, tour operators like Bath Stonehenge & Roman Baths Day Trip include multiple sites. The Salisbury Pass provides access to Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, and local museums at a discount when booked together.

Question 4

Can I visit Stonehenge during the summer solstice, and what should I know?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Stonehenge is open during the summer solstice (June 20-21) for a dawn celebration. Special access is granted overnight, with no ticket required. Expect large crowds, security checks, and temporary transport changes. Alcohol and pets are restricted. Free shuttle buses operate from nearby Larkhill. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot.
