Question 1

Which airport is closest to Sera Monastery and how do I get there from the terminal?

Accepted Answer

Fly into Lhasa Gonggar Airport, located about 60 kilometers southwest of the city. Upon arrival, take the airport shuttle bus to Lhasa city center or hire a pre-booked private taxi. The drive takes roughly one hour. Note that all travelers must have a Tibet Travel Permit arranged before flying, as independent travel to the region is not permitted for foreign passport holders.

Question 2

What is the best time of day to witness the famous monk debates at Sera Monastery?

Accepted Answer

Visit the monastery courtyard between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM on weekdays to see the iconic philosophical debates. Monks gather in the shade of the trees to engage in loud, animated discussions involving clapping and stomping. This tradition pauses during major religious holidays or severe weather. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot, as the area becomes crowded with tour groups during peak season.

Question 3

Can I visit Sera Monastery independently or do I need a guided tour?

Accepted Answer

Foreign travelers cannot visit Sera Monastery independently. You must be part of an organized tour with a licensed guide and private transport throughout your stay in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Your agency will handle the necessary permits and itinerary. While Chinese citizens can often visit freely, international visitors must adhere to these strict regulations to enter the monastery grounds and view the historic halls.

Question 4

How should I dress and behave when visiting Sera Monastery to respect local customs?

Accepted Answer

Dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees; remove hats and sunglasses before entering temple halls. Always walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels. Photography is strictly forbidden inside the main worship halls, though allowed in outer courtyards. Do not touch religious artifacts or point your feet at monks and statues. Offering a small donation is appreciated but never mandatory for entry.
