Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Santiago de Compostela to avoid rain and crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit in May or September - these months offer mild weather and fewer pilgrims than peak summer. Santiago's climate is oceanic, with frequent rain year-round, but May sees reduced rainfall and comfortable temperatures around 18°C. These months fall outside July’s peak pilgrimage rush, especially before the Feast of St. James (25 July), allowing easier access to the cathedral and albergues.

Question 2

How do I get from Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) to the city center using public transit?

Accepted Answer

Take the regular Airport Shuttle Bus (ALSA line 855) - it runs every 30–60 minutes from the terminal to the city’s bus station (Pza. da Estrela) in 20 minutes. Tickets cost €2.40 and are available from the driver or kiosk. From there, walk 15 minutes or take city bus line 1 to Praza do Obradoiro. Taxis cost around €20.

Question 3

Is the Pilgrim’s Passport (Credencial) required to walk the Camino, and where can I get one in Santiago?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Credencial is required to access pilgrim albergues along the Camino. While traditionally obtained before arrival, you can get one in Santiago at the Pilgrim’s Office (Rúa Carretas, 35) or authorized hostels like Abadía do Tao. Note: walking the last 100 km is required to earn the Compostela certificate.

Question 4

Are credit cards widely accepted in Santiago de Compostela, or should I carry cash?

Accepted Answer

Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in restaurants, hotels, and shops in the city center. However, smaller bars, rural albergues, and market vendors may be cash-only. Carry some euros for small purchases - ATMs are readily available. Tap-to-pay is common, but always confirm payment options in family-run establishments.
