Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Salerno to avoid crowds and get good weather?

Accepted Answer

Visit Salerno between late September and early November or from mid-March to May. These shoulder seasons offer mild temperatures, fewer tourists, and lower accommodation prices. Summer months (June-August) are hot and crowded, especially with ferry travelers to Capri and Amalfi Coast. The rainy season peaks in October, but brief showers rarely disrupt full days.

Question 2

How do I get from Salerno Airport (QSR) to the city center quickly and affordably?

Accepted Answer

Salerno does not have its own commercial airport. The closest is Naples International Airport (NAP), about 60 km north. From NAP, take the Alibus to Napoli Centrale, then a regional train to Salerno (30 minutes). A taxi from Naples Airport costs €100-€120. Alternatively, rent a car with pre-booked GPS for flexibility.

Question 3

Is there a public transit pass for tourists that covers Salerno and the Amalfi Coast?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the UNICO Campania Tourist Ticket covers trains, buses, and ferries in Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. The 3-day pass costs €30 and is valid on Trenitalia regional trains, SITA buses, and Travelmar ferries. Purchase at train stations, authorized vendors, or ferry terminals. Validate before boarding. Ideal for day trips to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello.

Question 4

What local customs should I follow when dining in Salerno to avoid offending locals?

Accepted Answer

In Salerno, dress neatly for dinner - avoid beachwear. Greet staff with “Buonasera” before seating. Do not order cappuccino after 11 a.m. or cut pasta with a fork and knife. Tipping is optional; round up or leave 5-10% for exceptional service. Always say “Grazie” when leaving. Reserve “buon appetito” for hosts to guests, not the reverse.
