Question 1

How do I get to Rottnest Island from Perth and which ferry terminal should I use?

Accepted Answer

Ferries depart daily from Fremantle, B Shed, or Perth's Barrack Street Jetty. The Fremantle crossing is shortest at thirty minutes, while Perth takes ninety. Book tickets online in advance as summer slots fill fast. Upon arrival at Thomson Bay, free shuttle buses connect major bays, or rent a bike immediately to explore the car-free island efficiently.

Question 2

Is there a best time to visit Rottnest Island to avoid crowds and see quokkas?

Accepted Answer

Visit during shoulder seasons like April-May or September-October for mild weather and fewer tourists. Quokkas are active year-round but are most visible early morning or late afternoon near the settlement and Wadjemup Lighthouse. Avoid Australian school holidays and public holidays when accommodation prices surge and beaches become overcrowded with day-trippers.

Question 3

What transport options are available on Rottnest Island since cars are banned?

Accepted Answer

Private vehicles are prohibited to protect the environment. Visitors must walk, cycle, or use the hop-on-hop-hop bus service. Bicycle rentals are available at the main settlement upon arrival; book e-bikes early during peak summer. The island bus loop covers all major beaches and bays, running frequently from dawn until dusk with tickets purchasable on board.
