Question 1

How do I get to Rongbu Temple from Kathmandu or Lhasa?

Accepted Answer

Fly into Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or Lhasa Gonggar Airport. From Lhasa, hire a private vehicle for the eight-hour drive via Gyantse and Shigatse. Foreign travelers require a Tibet Travel Permit and must join an organized tour. The road from Tingri to the temple is rough; a 4WD vehicle is essential, especially during winter snow or summer monsoon mud.

Question 2

What is the best time to visit Rongbu Temple for clear mountain views?

Accepted Answer

Visit between April and early June or September to October for the clearest views of Mount Everest. These months avoid the heavy summer monsoon clouds that often obscure the peak and the severe winter blizzards that can close high-altitude passes. Temperatures drop below freezing at night year-round, so pack heavy thermal layers regardless of the season you choose for your trek.

Question 3

Are there accommodation options directly at Rongbu Temple?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Rongbu Monastery Guesthouse offers basic dormitory-style beds and shared facilities directly opposite the temple. Rooms are unheated and spartan, providing only essential shelter at 5,000 meters altitude. Bring your own sleeping bag liner for warmth and hygiene. Booking in advance is impossible; arrival is first-come, first-served. Expect limited electricity and no hot showers due to the remote location.

Question 4

Do I need special permits to enter the Rongbu Temple area?

Accepted Answer

All foreign visitors must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit issued through a registered travel agency before arriving in Lhasa. Additionally, a Frontier Pass is mandatory to enter the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve where the temple sits. Your tour operator will arrange these documents. Carry physical copies at all times, as military checkpoints between Shigatse and the temple strictly enforce these regulations without exception.
