Question 1

What is the best time to visit Qinghai Lake to see the rapeseed flowers?

Accepted Answer

Visit Qinghai Lake in mid-July for peak rapeseed flower blooms. The golden fields contrast sharply with the blue water and sky. Avoid June as flowers are budding, and August when harvesting begins. Book accommodation early since this is the peak tourist season. Temperatures range from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius during the day.

Question 2

Which airport is closest to Qinghai Lake and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

Xining Caojiabao International Airport is the nearest gateway, located about 150 kilometers from Qinghai Lake. From the airport, take a pre-booked private car or join a tour group for the two-hour drive. Public buses run from Xining city center but require transfers. Renting a car offers flexibility to explore surrounding grasslands and monasteries at your own pace.

Question 3

Do I need special permits to travel around Qinghai Lake?

Accepted Answer

No special permits are required for most areas around Qinghai Lake. However, some remote monasteries or border zones may need local registration. Always carry your passport for hotel check-ins and police checkpoints. Foreign travelers should verify current rules with their tour operator, as regulations can change without notice. Local guides help navigate any administrative requirements smoothly.

Question 4

What currency should I use near Qinghai Lake and are cards accepted?

Accepted Answer

Use Chinese Yuan (CNY) throughout the Qinghai Lake region. Cash is essential for small vendors, roadside stalls, and rural guesthouses. Major hotels and restaurants in Erlangjian or Jiangxigou accept UnionPay cards, but Visa and Mastercard are rarely honored. Withdraw cash in Xining before heading to the lake, as ATMs are scarce near the shoreline.
