Question 1

What is the best time to visit Chaerhan Salt Lake for the mirror effect?

Accepted Answer

Visit between May and October when evaporation creates shallow, still water layers. Early morning or late afternoon offers the calmest winds for perfect sky reflections. Avoid the rainy season in July and August, as heavy clouds and ripples often ruin the mirror effect. Bring sunglasses due to intense glare.

Question 2

How do I get to Chaerhan Salt Lake from Golmud Airport?

Accepted Answer

Golmud Airport is the closest hub, located about 60 kilometers away. No direct public buses run to the lake entrance. Hire a private taxi or join a local tour group in Golmud city for the 45-minute drive. Ensure your driver knows the specific scenic area entrance, as the salt flats stretch over a vast, unmarked industrial zone.

Question 3

Are there entry fees or required passes for Chaerhan Salt Lake?

Accepted Answer

Access usually requires a ticket purchased at the visitor center, often bundled with shuttle bus service since private vehicles are restricted on the salt crust. Prices fluctuate by season but generally range from 60 to 100 CNY. Carry cash or have WeChat Pay ready, as card terminals can be unreliable in this remote location.

Question 4

What should I wear when walking on the salt crust at Chaerhan?

Accepted Answer

Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip; the salt crust can be sharp and uneven. Avoid sandals to prevent cuts from crystallized edges. Dress in layers for high UV exposure and sudden wind chill. Do not step into colored brine pools, as the high salinity and chemicals can damage skin and clothing instantly.
