Summer in Puebla is the "Green Season." Despite being summer, daytime temperatures actually drop slightly due to cloud cover and rain, averaging 24°C (75°F). The weather follows a very predictable tropical highland pattern: bright, sunny mornings followed by heavy, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that usually begin between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. These rains are intense but often short-lived, leaving the air fresh and the city’s many parks and surrounding valleys a vibrant emerald green. July and August are the wettest months, so it is essential to plan outdoor tours for the morning hours and keep a rain jacket handy for the late afternoon.

September remains quite wet, but by October, the rains begin to taper off significantly. Temperatures average 23°C (73°F) during the day and drop back down to 8°C (46°F) at night. This is widely considered one of the best times to visit; the air is crisp, the dust has been washed away by the summer rains, and the fields are full of flowers for the Day of the Dead celebrations. November marks the official return of the dry season, with the "Nortes" (cool winds from the north) bringing back the clear, chilly nights and the high-visibility days that are perfect for mountain views.

Winter is the sunniest time of year in Puebla, offering brilliant blue skies and the best visibility of the nearby Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. Daytime temperatures are very pleasant, averaging 21°C (70°F) to 23°C (73°F). However, the high altitude means that as soon as the sun drops, so does the temperature. Nighttime lows average 5°C (41°F) to 7°C (45°F), and it can occasionally feel even colder due to the lack of humidity. Rainfall is extremely rare, making this the peak season for outdoor sightseeing and exploring the historic center. You will need a T-shirt for midday and a substantial jacket for the early mornings and late evenings.

Spring is the warmest period in Puebla as the region waits for the summer rains to begin. Temperatures reach their annual peak in April and May, with daytime highs averaging 26°C (79°F) to 28°C (82°F). On the hottest days, it can hit 30°C (86°F), but the low humidity prevents it from feeling oppressive. The landscape can look quite dry and dusty during this time. May marks the transition into the rainy season, so you may start to see brief, cooling afternoon showers toward the end of the month. Evenings become milder, with lows rising to a comfortable 10°C (50°F) to 12°C (54°F).

Very good value for a 9-day tour covering 4 states. The included entrance fees to Teotihuacan and Monte Alban saved us at least $50 compared to doing it independently. The guide spoke excellent English and was funny. The only suggestion: add a quick stop at a local chocolate shop in Oaxaca – it's famous for a reason.
