Question 1

Where is the Mouth of Truth located in Rome and how do I visit it?

Accepted Answer

The Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità) is located in the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, near the Bocca della Verità metro stop (Line B). It's open daily; check current hours as they vary by season. Entry is free. Arrive early or late in the day to avoid crowds. Nearby attractions include the Forum and Circus Maximus.

Question 2

Is there an entrance fee to see the Mouth of Truth in Rome?

Accepted Answer

No, viewing the Mouth of Truth is free. It’s located in the open courtyard of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, accessible during church opening hours (typically 9:30 AM-5:00 PM, closed Thursdays and major holidays). Always verify current times before visiting, as they may change for religious events.

Question 3

Why is the Mouth of True called a lie detector?

Accepted Answer

Legend says the Mouth of Truth will bite off the hand of anyone who places it in the mouth while telling a lie. Popularized by the film *Roman Holiday*, this medieval-era fountain mask was likely a Roman drain cover. The "lie detector" myth stems from medieval superstitions about divine justice.

Question 4

What are the best times to visit the Mouth of Truth to avoid crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit early in the morning (right at opening, around 9:30 AM) or late afternoon (before 5:00 PM) on weekdays to avoid long lines. Saturdays draw larger crowds. Combining your visit with nearby sites like the Forum or Testaccio Market helps optimize your time and reduce wait times.
