Question 1

Which airport is closest to Moon Lake and how do I get there from the terminal?

Accepted Answer

The nearest major hub is Lugu Lake Airport, located about 60 kilometers away. Upon arrival, travelers can book shared minibuses or private taxis directly outside the terminal. The drive takes roughly one hour along winding mountain roads. Public buses are limited, so pre-booking a transfer via your hotel is recommended for late arrivals to ensure safe passage.

Question 2

When is the best time to visit Moon Lake to avoid heavy rain and see clear waters?

Accepted Answer

Visit between March and May or September and November for dry weather and optimal visibility. The rainy season occurs from June to August, often causing landslides on access roads and cloudy skies that obscure the lake's famous reflections. Winter months bring cold temperatures but offer crisp air and fewer crowds, though some boat services may reduce frequency due to wind conditions.

Question 3

Do I need a special local pass or permit to enter the Mosuo villages around Moon Lake?

Accepted Answer

No special permit is required for general tourism in the Mosuo villages surrounding Moon Lake. However, visitors must pay a scenic area entrance fee at the main gate, which covers access to hiking trails and cultural sites. Respect local customs by asking permission before photographing residents or entering private courtyards, as the Mosuo value privacy regarding their matrilineal family structures.

Question 4

What currency should I bring to Moon Lake and are credit cards widely accepted?

Accepted Answer

Bring Chinese Yuan (CNY) in cash, as ATMs are scarce and often out of service in remote villages. While larger hotels and some restaurants accept credit cards, small shops, boat rentals, and local eateries operate on cash only. Exchange money in Lijiang or Kunming before traveling to the lake to avoid being stranded without funds for essentials like meals or transport.
