Nestled in the quiet embrace of northern Italy’s Piedmont region, Lake Orta offers a serene alternative to its more famous alpine neighbors. Ringed by lush hills and pastel-hued villages, its compact size makes it perfect for leisurely walks and intimate exploration. The lake’s centerpiece, the enchanting island of San Giulio, rises gently from the waters with a Romanesque basilica and cobbled lanes that whisper centuries of calm. The village of Orta San Giulio, clustered at the lake’s edge, charms with its shaded piazzas and artisan boutiques. Less trafficked than Lake Como yet equally striking, Orta balances natural beauty with spiritual tranquility - enhanced by the Sacro Monte di Orta, a UNESCO-listed hillside complex of Franciscan chapels. Cycling the peaceful shoreline, sipping espresso with views of Monte Rosa’s snowy peak, or simply watching light dance on the water at dusk - each moment here feels like a discovery.
