Question 1

Is Jama Masjid currently open to tourists and what are its visiting hours?

Accepted Answer

Jama Masjid is open to tourists daily from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Non-Muslim visitors must dress modestly and remove footwear before entry. Avoid visiting during Friday noon prayers when access may be restricted for security reasons. Entry is free, but a small fee applies for bringing a camera.

Question 2

What is the best entrance to use when visiting Jama Masjid in Delhi?

Accepted Answer

The south gate is recommended for tourists as it has a less crowded security check and offers a stunning view upon entry. This entrance also provides easier access to the southern minaret, which visitors can climb for panoramic views of Old Delhi. Arrive early to avoid long queues.

Question 3

Are there any dress code requirements for visiting Jama Masjid?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all visitors must cover their shoulders and legs. Scarves are provided for women who need them, but bringing your own is advisable. Men should avoid shorts. All guests must remove footwear before entering the prayer halls—socks are permitted. Storage is available near each entrance for a nominal fee.

Question 4

How can I avoid crowds when visiting Jama Masjid in Delhi?

Accepted Answer

Visit right at opening time (7:00 AM) or two hours before sunset for fewer crowds and soft lighting ideal for photography. Avoid weekends, public holidays, and Islamic festivals like Eid. The early morning also allows a quieter experience of the mosque’s atmosphere and surrounding alleys of Old Delhi.
